Are Mario Kart 8 amiibo Figures Racing Our Way?

Nintendo's new NFC figurines (called amiibo) were first unveiled at this year's E3 with a vague indication of their functionality. Although everything hasn't been clearly explained, we do know that amiibo will be featured in Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart 8, and a handful of other titles shown below:

Until now, I assumed that the Smash Bros. line of amiibo would work with the other games, but upon closer inspection, it appears that Mario Kart 8 might just have its own unique line of kart-racing amiibo figures. In fact, the biggest hint may have been right in front of us this whole time. Check out the screens below to see what I mean.

First, note that the Mario amiibo figure shown off at this year's E3 has a distinct Smash Bros. logo displayed on its pedestal. This could suggest that this amiibo figure is exclusive to Super Smash Bros.

Now take a look at an early build of Mario Kart 8's character selection screen. (This image is taken from IGN's video coverage of E3 2013, a full year before the final version of the game was released.)

Compare that with the finalized character selection screen. Notice any differences? Yep, the final build shows off the character on an amiibo-esque Mario Kart pedestal. Perhaps these pedestals were added later in the development cycle to coincide with a specific line of forthcoming Mario Kart amiibo figures.

So imagine an entirely new set of these designed specifically for Mario Kart 8. If these sets are unique to each game, then add in another set for Captain Toad. And another for Yoshi's Woolly World. And yet another for Mario Party 10. Better take out that second mortgage!

So what do you think? Is the character selection screen in Mario Kart 8 an indication of upcoming amiibo figures? If so, what do you think these figures will actually do in the game? And, will you be buying them? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
